HIPAA Tip of the MonthHIPAA “Discount” Double Check
OK – maybe there is no “discount” but doing a double check before disclosing Protected Health Information (PHI) will always be the best insurance. Remember the following tips:
Always remember to take the time to do the “double-check”.
- When disclosing protected health information (PHI), it is very important to use at least two client identifiers to assure you are disclosing the correct client’s information. The most common double-identifiers are name (including middle initial) and date of birth. In some cases, you may need to look to a third identifier such as an assigned identification number, telephone number, or social security number. Whenever in doubt, always take the extra time to assure proper identification.
- Many of us utilize a shared Multi-function Device (MFD) for making copies and sending/receiving faxes. When retrieving copies and faxes, make sure to double check that records are not inter-mingled resulting in retrieving or disclosing incorrect information or information not intended for you. Talk with your Supervisor or Technology Services about setting up a Mailbox or Secure Print option on the MFD.Disclosing incorrect client’s information is a privacy violation.
